Declining Sex Ratio

National Workshop on Missing Indian Female

To highlight the ongoing debate at the national level and to initiate a focused discussion among different stakeholders to plan interventions at the State level, the Gender Resource Centre (GRC), Ahmedabad, Department of Women and Child Development, Govt. of Gujarat, with support from UNFPA, had organized a national level workshop titled “Missing Indian Females: Mapping the Adverse Sex Ratio” in December 2003. The objective of the workshop was to outline trends in sex ratio, highlight sources of gender bias, investigate inter-linkages between sex selective abortion and decline in fertility, and locate the resulting social impact.

Beti Bachao Campaign

Gujarat is suffering from one of the worst outcomes of gender based discrimination, i.e. declining male-female sex ratio. The state average of child sex ratio (0-6 years) is 886 per 1000 boys. And General Sex Ratio declined dramatically from 921 in 2001 to 918 in 2011. To address this issue various efforts are being made, one of the major being the ‘Beti Bachao Campaign’ that was launched by Honorable Chief Minister on the occasion of World Women’s Day in 2005. Gender Resource centre was an active partner of the campaign, and was involved in documentation and publications with a realization that it could play a vital role in changing the perception of the society in general on such important issue.
